Call for Nominations:
YOUNG SCIENTIST PRIZE - Computational Physics

The Commission on Computational Physics (C20) of IUPAP seeks nominations for its 2011 Young Scientist Prize. Nominees should have a maximum of 8 years of research experience following their PhD and should be the principal performer of original work of outstanding scientific quality in Computational Physics. The prize consists of the 1000 euros, a medal, and a certificate. The awards will be made at the Commission's next Conference on Computational Physics (CCP2011) to be held in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, USA, October 30th through November 3rd, 2011. The winner will also be invited to present a paper at this meeting.

Former Branch Chair Prof Hans Bachor wins two (more!) top awards.

Prof Hans Bachor, former Branch Chair and head of the ARC Centre of Excellence in Quantum Atom Optics, has been awarded the joint AIP/IoP Harrie Massey Medal and the Beattie Steel Medal of the Australian Optical Society. Congratulations Hans and best wishes from the branch.

ACT AIP in 2011

The ACT Branch Executive wishes a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all our members. We will be holding a delayed 2010 AGM in January, and resuming the branch program under the leadership of our new branch president, Joe Hope, later in the year.

Welcome to the AIP's ACT branch website.

The Australian Institute of Physics (AIP) is the professional organisation concerned with the promotion of physics and the welfare of physicists in Australia. It has branches in every State and a National Secretariat located in Melbourne. The Australian Institute of Physics aims to promote all aspects of physics to the wider community and to provide support to physicists and physics teachers.

ACT Branch activities include:

  • monthly meetings at which invited speakers talk about the latest advances in physics
  • providing sponsorship for student members to attend approved conferences
  • taking an active role on issues in physics and science education
